Catch Up & Joleen's Version

Surgery

So, now is my turn to blog about the surgery. I am SO glad it is over. We spent all kinds of cuddle time and kept him up late on Wednesday night. Bill woke him up before 5 on Thursday and gave him Pedialyte and then we went back to sleep and Canon slept until 7:45 when we woke him up. We got to the hospital and didn't go by registration so some old cranky lady gave us a hard time but a nice woman from registration brought our paperwork up and we were set.

We got called in and we stripped Canon down and put him in a little hospital gown. It was huge on him and it was kind of girly but oh well nobody ever likes hospital gowns anyway. He was such a good boy and in a great mood. He smiled at all the doctors and flirted with the nurses as Bill said. He got a little fussy around 9:00 and then took an hour long nap and the nurse anesthetists (sp?) came in and were talking to me and then they were ready to take him and I didn't realize it and I was a little clung to the crib so I let go and kissed him and went to the waiting room with tears in my eyes and concern in my heart.

We decided to go get some water and we were told to hurry right back and we were given a pager. When we were on our way back the pager went off and I flew through the doors and Dr. Kass was on the phone and he had found cysts and asked if we could take them off. I was unprepared for this so I handed the phone to Bill and he took care of it.

I thought the hardest part would be seeing him go off but it turned out waiting was grueling. I don't remember exactly how long the surgery took but I think it was a little before noon when the dr. came and told us everything went well and they were just waiting on Canon to wake up. He took about an hour to wake up and just when I was starting to get really concerned and upset the nurse came in and said we could come into recovery and see him.

Looking at him with an iv and some other wires was really tough but he looked so cute all snuggled up in his warmed blanket and seemed like he was trying to stay awake but would drift off. We decided to start creeping the blanket back and the nurse said we could hold him so I did and then we got a 5 oz bottle down him and he perked right up and then we were off about 1:30 and took him home.

I picked up his prescription for Tylenol with Codeine while the boys slept but we did not end up using it because the regular strength Tylenol was working just fine.

Recovery & Friday

We got home and Canon was in a pretty good mood, still giggling and smiling and generally pretty happy. He napped a lot on Friday and we gave him 3-4 doses of regular strength Tylenol that day. When we changed his diaper that day and looked I almost cried because there was SO much work done down there. We refer to it as a train wreck. There was the circumcision of course and then there was stitches all down the ridge line where they took off the cysts. We have been putting Neosporin regular ointment on it and then used washcloths for awhile but stopped after a couple of days because that was giving him diaper rash, poor little guy. He was so good humored about everything though and continues to be.

I remember when Canon was first born and he peed on me a little but he outgrew that. Well now that he's been circumcised he is doing that again. I was all ready for Conor and Beth to come over and then when I was changing Canon I felt something wet on my forehead and my hair and determined that yes, he peed in my hair. I got to take 2 showers that day, little squirt!

Beth & Conor came over and brought us dinner and dessert and came to see Canon. We are so lucky and thankful for friends like them! Conor marveled at Canon's demeanor. It is because he is a baby. If it was one of us we would be feeling it.

Saturday

This day was like Friday and we stayed in because we didn't want to have to strap Canon into his carseat anymore than we absolutely need to. We have been holding him a lot and letting him play in his gym. I think Bill worked on Saturday afternoon and Canon and I napped and just hung out. It was nice to be able to spend so much time with him. Bill went out and got Chinese for us but it wasn't very good. We can not seem to find a consistently good Chinese restaurant besides PF Changs down here. We may just have to always use PF Changs from now on.

Sunday

Einstein day, bagels and the paper. Bill got breakfast and then went to work until noon and I hung out with Canon and tried to make a card with my scrapbook stuff but Canon was all excited by the paper and made it very challenging to do anything. We had taken a nap for an hour before that but once he was up he wanted to "help" mama too ;0) Cutie pie!

I left the boys and went to my friend Lori's baby shower. I hung out with a bunch of my friends from work and had a nice time. It was at Pasquales and they had a nice spread. Bread, salad, relish tray, mostaccioli, pizza and Costco cake - YUM! I got Baby Jacobs 2 cute sleepers, a teether, and 10 little board books that are for numbers 1-10 and have animals for each number. I should have bought one for Canon too but I need to restrain myself sometimes! Baby showers are pretty fun. I love to see the cute baby stuff.

After the shower I went to get tissue paper for another baby's gift, cubicle hooks from Office Depot and sweet potatoes, squash, and carrots for Canon.

We gave Canon jar food for the first time today. We gave him sweet potatoes and he was like, what is this stuff but kept opening his mouth and eating so he must have liked them. We gave him his oatmeal after that and his face was priceless, like oooh "this stuff is different than that other stuff mom & dad".

We also gave him a bath because it was 72 hrs after the surgery so we could. He was okay with it but I think it might have softened stitches and stuff up because he seemed like it hurt so we gave him Tylenol after and he was fine. He is such a trooper and an awesome little boy!
